Lead Climbing Course
Establishing a route from the ground up calls for a great deal of competence. Lead climbing is a high risk endeavor that requires unique judgment and an ability to skillfully construct a fail-proof belay chain while also sustaining physical and mental composure. As with any technical climbing, it also demands flawless teamwork. Throughout this three day course you will receive a hands-on, in depth look into the dynamics of the complete belay chain. This also includes understanding the severe forces that can be applied during a leader fall, and the magnitude of your responsibility on a rope team. Much practice will be given to the proper use of specialized protection devices, learning also to recognize their limitations. You will learn how to construct secure hanging belays and anchor directionals which demand thoroughness. Since climbing also calls for an ability to improvise you will be given situations that challenge you to think and respond accordingly. We focus on specific climbing skills which are imperative to the lead climber. Choosing climbs that match your ability you will begin establishing routes from the bottom up. Also covered within this course are: double rope techniques, protecting for the second climber, aid climbing, gear selection/racking and retrieval, ascender use, rappel/retreat safety, haul systems and route ratings.
