Winter Mountaineering
As alluring as the mountains are in the winter, there are the harsh realities of extreme weather, cold, and often dangerous terrain. Climbing under these conditions calls for a diversity of skills, knowledge, determination, and sound thinking! Our winter mountaineering program takes you to the cold and icy peaks of Colorado where, with a small team, you'll learn by doing! Some of the fundamentals we cover are: clothing and equipment needs, personal care, cold injury prevention and acclimatization. Other alpine requisites covered are: recognition and evaluation of hazards inherent to a high (winter) mountain environment. You'll also be introduced to route finding skills, mountain camping, snow caves, emergency bivys and weather assessments. Developing your alpine climbing skills will involve learning alpine rope handling and belaying procedures, team and self arrest methods as well as ice and snow climbing techniques. Our segment on ice, snow and rock anchors is also a crucial requisite to alpinism - as is developing mountain judgment. Climbing on mixed terrain is a challenging endeavor, especially under savage conditions. However, this course is designed and purposed to lend a sound beginning to a craft that is continually refined through time and experience. Join us on the heights this winter and make your first steps count!
