Alpine Skills Course
The Cascade Mountains of the Pacific Northwest are the most glaciated in the lower 48 States. This range of striking peaks offer challenges comparable to the highest mountains in the world and is a favored training ground for American foreign expeditions. Our six day intensive course begins with a hike through lush forest to base camp which overlooks the magnificent North Face of Mt. Baker. Your next few days will be spent on this glacier learning and developing the many alpine climbing skills necessary to make our team ascent possible. You will practice alpine belay methods, crevasse rescue, and roped travel techniques. Some of the specific climbing skills we will cover are: high and low angle ice climbing, and moderate to steep snow techniques. These skills each require various uses of ice axe and crampons. Focus is also applied to your being competent with ice axe arrests! You'll learn to use a mix of ice and snow anchors such as: ice screws, pickets, flukes, bollards, and discover how to create other deadman type anchors. We also cover hazard evaluation, weather assessment, route finding, protecting against the elements, emergency bivys, and more. There is no way to accurately describe climbing up through the complex maze of blue ice, steep snow, ridges and couloirs of a Pacific Northwest peak except through a personal experience. This course is designed to put you well on your way to further developing the skills, attitude and understanding necessary to pursue alpinism in any mountain range in the world.
